Where the risk is highest
Ixodes holocyclus (paralysis tick) is a serious problem along much of the east coast and hinterland. Risk maps change with season and rainfall — ask your local vet what they are seeing this year.
Prevention and searches
- Use a vet-recommended tick preventative licensed for dogs — and keep it up to date.
- Search the coat daily: head, neck, ears, between toes, armpits, lips.
- Keep long grass down in the yard where you can.
- If you find a tick, your vet may still want to see the dog — toxin can already be in the system.
Emergency signs
Wobbliness, change in bark, retching, difficulty breathing, or a dog that cannot get up needs a vet immediately — including after hours. Do not wait until morning.
