Day one priorities
- Quiet arrival: let your pet explore one room or a secure yard section at their pace.
- Show them toilet areas (litter or outdoor spot) and keep the first walk short for dogs.
- Offer water; feed a meal similar to what the rescue used if you know it.
- Book or confirm a vet wellness check and transfer microchip details into your name.
Build a simple routine
Same feed times, same sleep spot, and predictable toilet breaks reduce anxiety. Children should interact calmly and with adult supervision.
For dogs, many trainers suggest a “decompression” period before busy dog parks. For cats, keep indoor-only at first even if they will later have supervised outdoor time.
What “normal” stress looks like
Hiding, mild appetite drop, or restless nights can happen for a few days. Contact the rescue or your vet if your pet will not eat, has diarrhoea that persists, or seems painful.
