Flea and tick prevention in Australia

Fleas and ticks are a year-round issue in much of Australia. Prevention is easier than treating a heavy infestation or paralysis tick scare.

Why Australia is different

Warmth and humidity keep flea life cycles going longer than in colder countries. Coastal and bush-edge suburbs also raise tick risk for dogs that walk grassy or scrubby paths.

Paralysis ticks are a serious veterinary emergency in endemic areas — know the signs and your local risk with your vet or clinic nurse.

Practical habits that help

  1. Use a vet-recommended preventative on the schedule they advise — do not mix products without checking compatibility.
  2. Check dogs for ticks after bush or long-grass walks, especially around the head, neck and between toes.
  3. Wash bedding regularly and vacuum soft furnishings if you suspect fleas.
  4. Treat all pets in the household when advised — fleas do not respect “indoor only” labels forever.

When to call the vet

Pale gums, sudden weakness, laboured breathing, or a dog collapsing after a tick exposure needs urgent care. Skin sores, relentless scratching, or anaemia signs also deserve a proper check — not just another over-the-counter spray.

General information only. Product choice and dosing must come from a veterinarian familiar with your pet and region.
