Before you browse reptiles
Reptiles are licensed animals in Australia. Please read these rules once — we’ll remember for 30 days on this device.
Buying a reptile
- You must hold a current licence for this species in your state before buying (unless it is licence-exempt where you live). Fines apply and animals can be seized.
- Posting live reptiles through Australia Post is illegal. Use pick up, a specialised live-animal air freight service or door-to-door pet transport.
- Interstate moves need an export licence from the seller's state and an import licence from yours.
- Tasmania does not allow private import of mainland reptiles.
- WA buyers need a WA pet keeper's licence first. Listings from other states are not available to WA buyers without a DBCA import licence and biosecurity approval.
- Exotic reptiles (e.g. corn snakes, ball pythons, leopard geckos, iguanas) are illegal in Australia and not allowed on MateLoop.
- MateLoop does not verify licences and is not a party to the sale. Check the seller's licence before you pay.
How reptiles work on MateLoop
- Contact the seller only. There is no online checkout for live reptiles — you message the seller and arrange the handover together.
- Every seller shows a licence number (keeper or dealer), or confirms the species is licence-exempt in their state. No reptile is exempt in WA, and venomous species always need a licence.
- Native, captive-bred and hatched only. No wild-caught animals and no eggs.
- WA: a DBCA Fauna Transfer Authority is needed before every handover, and the species must be on the WA Pet Keeping List.
- Tasmania: reptile listings from Tasmania are not available, and mainland reptiles cannot be sent to Tasmania.
Where to get a licence
Licences are issued by the wildlife authority in your state or territory (NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Victoria’s Conservation Regulator, Queensland’s Department of Environment, SA’s Department for Environment and Water, WA’s DBCA, NRE Tasmania, ACT Environment and NT Parks and Wildlife). Check which licence class covers the species you want before you contact a seller.
Only available to holders of a current licence authorising possession of this species.
