How to clean a fish tank

Good fish tank cleaning is regular and gentle: clear the glass, vacuum debris, change some water, and leave your beneficial bacteria alone.

What “clean” should mean

A healthy tank is not a sterile tank. You want low waste and clear viewing panels — not a full bleach-out that kills filter bacteria and shocks fish.

Plan cleaning on the same day as a partial water change so you disturb the system once, not twice in a week.

Step-by-step tank clean

  1. Unplug heaters if you will drop the water line below the heater, and move cords safely.
  2. Wipe inside glass with an aquarium-safe scraper or pad — avoid household glass cleaners and soap.
  3. Siphon 20–30% of the water (adjust for your stocking) while gently vacuuming mulm from the substrate.
  4. Rinse décor in old tank water if needed; skip boiling or bleach unless you know the material can handle it and you rinse thoroughly.
  5. Refill with dechlorinated water matched close to tank temperature. Restart equipment and watch fish for a few minutes.

Do not do these

Do not empty the whole tank “for a deep clean” on a routine schedule. Do not wash all filter media in hot tap water on cleaning day. Do not use vinegar, bleach or kitchen sprays inside a stocked tank unless you are following a specialist sterilise-and-restart plan.

Algae that keeps returning usually means light, nutrients or feeding — cleaning the glass alone will not fix the cause.

When to get help

Large tanks, stubborn algae, or no time for weekly maintenance are good reasons to book aquatic cleaning help. MateLoop lists aquatic services, and our filter-cleaning guide covers the sponge and media side in more detail.

Stocking, plants and local water chemistry change the routine. Use test kits; this is not veterinary advice.
