Core equipment
You will usually need a tank, filter, heater (for tropical setups), thermometer, dechlorinator, and a gravel vacuum. LED lighting helps if you want live plants.
Place the tank on a level, sturdy stand away from direct sun and heavy foot traffic.
Setup steps
- Rinse substrate and hardscape with water only (no soap).
- Fill with tap water treated with a quality dechlorinator. Install filter and heater.
- Cycle the tank before adding fish — beneficial bacteria need time to handle ammonia and nitrite. Use a test kit; do not rely on “it looks clear”.
- Add hardy starter fish only after ammonia and nitrite read zero and nitrate is present or manageable.
- Stock slowly. Overcrowding is the fastest way to lose beginners’ fish.
Common mistakes
Adding fish the day you set up, skipping water tests, overfeeding, and mixing aggressive species in a small tank.
Live plants can help stability — browse live plants and aquatic supplies on MateLoop when you are ready.
Local water chemistry varies across Australia. Adjust for your region and species needs.
