A simple maintenance rhythm
Most community tanks do well with a weekly check: temperature, equipment running, fish behaviour, and a partial water change. Spot-clean algae on glass as needed rather than waiting for a full scrub day.
Write the routine down. Missed weeks are when nitrate climbs and filters clog.
Filter and equipment care
- Rinse mechanical media in old tank water — never in hot tap water that kills beneficial bacteria.
- Stagger media cleans from big water changes when the tank is still settling.
- Check heaters with a thermometer; mis-set heaters are a common crash cause.
- Keep lids and cords tidy so salt creep or humidity does not damage plugs.
Glass, substrate and décor
A magnetic scraper or pad handles most glass film. Vacuum mulm from the substrate during water changes without digging up planted roots if you can avoid it.
Decor does not need bleaching every month. If you must disinfect hardscape, research safe methods for your materials and rinse thoroughly.
When to book aquatic maintenance
Large tanks, algae outbreaks you cannot beat, moving house, or simply no time are good reasons to hire help. MateLoop lists aquatic service providers — search local hubs for tank cleaning and setup support near you.
Stocking, plants and water chemistry change the schedule. Use test kits and local advice for your setup.
