Betta fish care in Australia

Bettas are tropical fish, not desk ornaments. They need warm, clean water, a lid, and space to swim — a tiny bowl will not do that.

A decent home

A filtered, heated tank with a lid is the baseline. Room-temperature Australian winters are too cold for most bettas. Live or silk plants give rest spots without tearing fins.

Weekly care

  1. Heat in the mid-20s °C unless your vet or species notes say otherwise — use a heater and thermometer, not guesswork.
  2. Partial water changes with dechlorinated water matched to temperature.
  3. Feed small portions; skip a day if the belly looks round.
  4. Do not house two males together. Female groups need more skill and space.

Buying or rehoming

Ask how the fish is kept now. A betta from a tiny cup needs slow acclimation into a cycled tank. List honestly on MateLoop if you can no longer keep them.

Hobby guidance for common pet bettas. Individual fish and local water chemistry vary — an aquatic-experienced vet is best if they stop eating or gasp.
