How to rehome fish and aquatic pets in Australia

Unwanted fish still need the right tank, not a creek. List species, size and water type honestly so the next keeper can succeed.

Never release them

Releasing aquarium animals into creeks, ponds or stormwater is illegal in many places and harms native wildlife. Rehome, return to a store that will take them, or ask an aquatic vet about humane options you cannot rehome.

What to put on the MateLoop listing

  1. Species (and variety), adult size, and how many.
  2. Freshwater or marine, temperature range, and whether they are with plants or shrimp.
  3. Tank size they live in now — buyers should not downgrade into a bowl.
  4. Clear photos against the glass; mention any known disease history.
  5. Local pickup with a plan to bag in oxygenated water for the trip home.

Packing for handover

Use a proper fish bag, not a tiny takeaway tub. Match temperature. Give the buyer our acclimation guide so they do not dump bag water into their display tank.

Some species need permits. Check your state biosecurity rules before selling or moving aquatic animals.
