Before moving day
- Update microchip and council registration details as soon as you have the new address.
- Book pet-friendly transport or a sitter for the messiest hours.
- Pack a “first night” kit: food, bowls, litter, leads, meds, familiar bedding.
- For aquariums, plan fish-safe bags, battery air pumps and temperature control — or ask an aquatic service for help.
On the day
Keep cats in one closed room or carrier until doors stop swinging. Dogs often cope better with a calm walker or a trusted person away from the truck.
Do not leave pets in hot cars while you load. Australian summers make that deadly quickly.
First week in the new home
Re-establish routine fast: meals, litter location, walks. Check windows, balconies and fences before free roam. Anxious pets may hide — give space and keep introductions to guests slow.
Interstate moves and exotic pets can have extra rules. Confirm transport and biosecurity requirements yourself.
