Indoor cat enrichment ideas

Indoor cats need more than food and a windowsill. Short daily play, climbing options, and scratching posts prevent boredom and behaviour issues.

The daily basics

  1. Two short wand-toy sessions (hunt → catch → eat works well).
  2. Fresh water in more than one spot; consider a fountain if your cat ignores still bowls.
  3. A tall scratcher and a horizontal option — cats have preferences.
  4. Quiet high perches with a view of birds or street life.

Apartment-friendly upgrades

Window perches, cardboard boxes, puzzle feeders, and rotating a small toy set weekly beat buying everything at once.

Secure screens before any “supervised balcony” time. Many Australian apartments are safer as indoor-only with enrichment.

When behaviour is a message

Sudden litter accidents, over-grooming, or night yowling can be medical or environmental. Rule out pain with a vet, then adjust enrichment and routine.

General enrichment ideas only — not a substitute for veterinary or behaviour advice.
