Is this park a fit?
Look for secure fencing, shade, water, clear rules and a crowd that matches your dog’s size and confidence. A shy dog may do better on a quiet weekday morning than a busy Saturday.
If your dog is still learning recall, or is reactive on lead, a fenced training field or quiet walk may be wiser than a chaotic off-leash yard.
Park manners that matter
- Pick up waste every time — bags in, bags out.
- Watch play style: bullying, mounting or constant cornering means intervene early.
- Keep phones secondary; scan your dog every few seconds.
- Leave if your dog looks overwhelmed, or if another owner will not manage theirs.
- In Australian heat, go early or late, carry water, and skip hot asphalt.
Puppies and introductions
Confirm vaccine status with your vet before busy parks. Introduce calmly at the gate, and do not force greetings. A short successful visit beats a long scary one.
Council rules and park designs vary. Follow local signs and your vet’s advice for young or unwell dogs.
