Smell often lives in dog beds, car seats, rugs, and damp corners — not only on the coat. Wash textiles on a hot cycle the fabric can handle, and dry completely so mildew does not replace dog odour.
A sudden strong smell, yeasty skin scent, or ear odour can be medical. Check with a vet before you scrub the whole house weekly and miss an infection.
Everyday odour control
- Wash bedding and soft toys regularly; have a spare bed so one can dry fully.
- Vacuum floors and sofas; wipe hard floors with a pet-safe cleaner — avoid heavy perfume sprays that only mask smells.
- After rain or beach walks, towel dry paws and coat; wet-dog smell fades faster when fur is dry.
- Empty and wash food bowls daily; stale water bowls smell more than people expect.
- Bathe only as often as your vet or coat type needs — over-washing can dry skin and make oily smell rebound.
Accidents and urine smell
Blot fresh urine, then use an enzyme cleaner made for pet urine so residue does not keep attracting the dog back. Skip ammonia-based products that can smell similar to urine to dogs.
For carpets, treat the pad if the soak-through is old — surface spray alone often fails. Open windows and run fans; Australian humidity keeps damp smells around.
When cleaning is not enough
Anal gland issues, dental disease, skin infections and ear problems create odours no spray will fix. Book dog care or a vet check, and keep heat safety in mind if you are bathing more in summer.
